Songstress Maki Twala runs and co-owns Soweto’s Lapeng wine and food lounge with her husband and music legend Chicco Twala in Diepkloof.

She shot to fame in the 1980s and 1990s as lead singer of girl group Chimora, after providing backing vocalist to Afro-pop legend Paul Ndlovu.

Who has been the greatest inspiratio­n in your life?

My late mother Sheila Motloung.

What inspired your passion for music?

I grew up listening and being inspired by Sis Letta Mbulu and Mama Miriam Makeba.

Do you still perform or compose music today?

No, I am now focusing on my family and business.

What has been your greatest achievemen­t in music?

Touring the world and entertaini­ng people of different cultures.

How did the idea to start Lapeng come about?

Lapeng started as small restaurant, selling take-away traditiona­l food. My husband later decided that we expand it to what it is today.

What is the most popular dish at Lapeng?

Mogodu and traditiona­l chicken (umleqwa).

What is the most expensive whisky or wine at Lapeng?

Johnny Walker Blue Label whisky and Dalla Cia Teano wine (R1 200).

What is your favourite drink?

Red wine.

What is your best holiday destinatio­n?

Paris.

Which celebrity visited your place recently?

Lucas Radebe.

We serve the best wine and traditiona­l food. Our grill menu is also popular.
