A genius treatment for your skin
Multi-masking hits all the right beauty spots
You have heard of multitasking, now try multi-masking!
Some beauty experts are calling it a genius idea for taking care of one’s skin.
Since you may be wondering exactly what multi-masking is, how it works and exactly why it is being highly regarded in the world of beauty, Haykey Kirton, an aesthetic therapist in Rosebank, explained the concept and the benefits this trend offers.
“Multi-masking is using several different treatments at the same time to get a customised remedy. It is essential that you layer your products for best results. One mask is never enough. I like to combine various serums with different masks for best results.
“There are certain brands that work well together. There are cases in which I would only use serums and masks from one particular brand but most times I combine between two different brands, all customised to each individual skin care needs,” Kirton says.
She is confident there are virtually no negatives to this skin care strategy and that one can only reap the benefits.
“Creating your own concoction makes it easy to treat combination skin or spot-specific flare ups.”
She advises that when one starts to multi-mask, it does not have to be a daily ritual, adding that there are no age restrictions with this treatment and that it is a great idea for all skin types and ages.
Cape Town dermatologist Geraldine Peters says that it is vital to familiarise yourself with the problem areas on your face, as multi-masking also requires a knowledge of exactly what masks to use for each area.
“Multi-masking offers the opportunity to use different masks for different areas of the face. For example, the area underneath your eyes tends to be very sensitive and supple, which, if using an abrasive mask that would ideally work on problem areas like those with blackheads, may leave the area irritated. You really want to learn the dimensions of your face in order to determine the right mask that will go on the right area,” she says.
For your nose
The nose tends to have an overproduction of oil, caused by sebum, which is the reason a lot of people tend to have a shiny nose. When this happens, the pores on your nose can be clogged, causing blackheads and even pimples.
This is the reason why a peeling mask is ideal for the nose area because it can strip away all the debris.
For your forehead
This area tends to be the most exposed to harsh sunlight, which can be damaging to the skin as well as being the number one culprit for premature skin ageing. Look for a mask with anti-oxidant properties, which have been proven to penetrate the skin and encourage cell renewal.
For your chin area
The chin tends to be a favourite spot for pimples on some people, so try a good exfoliating mask to remove dead cells and prevent an outbreak.

For your cheeks
The cheek area can be quite tricky. There are different masks you can use, depending on your skin type – be it oily, dry or combination skin – which is a little bit of both.
For oily or combination skin, try using a clay mask, which will help with excessive oil control and prevent breakouts.
For dry skin, try a cucumber or aloe vera gel mask, which is great for re-hydrating dry skin and will keep your cheeks supple and soft.
