Phiri aims to play big role at Wits this season

Consistency on loan at Stars earned him recall

Bidvest Wits midfielder Gerald Phiri Jr aims to utilise the experience he gained on loan at Platinum Stars last season to play a starring role for the Clever Boys this season.

Phiri joined Wits from Zimbabwean outfit CAPS United in 2015 but he was loaned out to Botswana’s Township Rollers the same season before linking up with Dikwena, still on loan, last season.

Last season the Malawian international had an impressive season for Stars, playing 22 matches in all competitions and scoring three goals in the process.

His splendid displays at the Rustenburg-based club earned him Wits’ trust as he was recalled before the start of this season.

“I think playing more for Stars was the reason Wits said I must return this season. I am not the same player compared to my first year in South Africa. I have grown, especially at Stars but I will always strive to improve,” Phiri told Sowetan.

“I want to help the team achieve what they achieved last season. My aim is to play a big role for the team, if I am given the opportunity.”

The 24-year-old left-winger scored on his Wits debut against Orlando Pirates, his solitary strike ending the Students’ winless streak in five matches in September.

“It was a very special moment for me [to score on debut]. The goal boosted my, and the team’s, confidence. As an attacking player, scoring goals is always on my mind,” said Phiri, who is the son of Malawian national team coach Gerald Phiri.

So far, Phiri has registered four appearances for Gavin Hunt’s side.

The well-travelled midfielder faces stern competition for game time in the Premiership champions’ midfield which boasts seasoned campaigners like Daine Klate and Elias Pelembe.
