Bidvest Wits striker Amr Gamal aims to up his game for the rest of the season in order to raise his chances of making the World Cup squad for Egypt.

The Egyptians qualified for the global showpiece for the first time in 28 years last month after topping Group E of the Russia 2018 qualifiers.

Gamal was often used as a substitute by coach Hector Cuper.

The Pharaohs last competed in the World Cup in 1990 in Germany, a year before Gamal, 26, was born.

“I want to improve myself as a player in the next six months and play my best football,” Gamal said.

“When you qualify for the first time in 28 years, it’s the best feeling ever you can have as a footballer. It’s a day I will never forget.”

Gamal says the nation is still on cloud nine after making the World Cup cut.

“The qualification is a very big thing in Egypt. You can imagine 95 million people have been waiting for the World Cup for a long time.”

The national team has already began their preparations, added Gamal, the first Egyptian to play in the PSL.

Gamal hopes to make an impact when Wits face Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout semifinal at the Bidvest Stadium tomorrow (3.30pm).

“I enjoy playing against the big teams. I hope it will be an open game from both teams,” said the striker who is on loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
