MEC not moved by Twitter rant
Lesufi takes social media users’ tirade on the chin
Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi kept his cool yesterday when he was insulted and called names on Twitter.
The problem arose when a Twitter user asked Lesufi to probe schools like Laerskool Danie Malan in Pretoria North because they have four Afrikaans classes and one English class per grade, claiming it is structural racial exclusion.
@adele_moolman did not take kindly to this and tweeted: “Jirre ... There is already 4 other schools in the north that is mainly for English kids. Afrikaans people only have Danie Malan. What the f**k is wrong with you people. This is a democratic country and we are allowed to have Afrikaans education (sic).”
Lesufi responded: “I am glad you are aware that it’s a democratic country. To express a view it’s not undemocratic.”
@johansmitsin wrote: “Beware that language like 1976 becomes a flame that only needs oxygen. Don’t you learn from the past? Or is it simply arrogance that is if you have read it before (sic).”
Lesufi responded: “I respect your right to insult me but do not agree with the insults. But if this makes you happy, go ahead enjoy your day? I am vulgar proof.”
@johansmitsin wrote: “Lesufi, you need someone to change your nappy? Go read section 29 of the constitution. Paragraph 2 is enlightening. Everyone has a right to receive edu …”
Lesufi responded: “Thanks. Respectfully noted. The nappy will be changed.”
