Poo brigade ‘disrupts’ Gordhan’s speech

ANC calls for disciplinary action

- By Mpho Sibanyoni

The ANC has called for its members whose actions resulted in former finance minister Pravin Gordhan abandoning his speech yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal to be disciplined.

According to media reports, two men from the ANC Youth League in KwaDukuza went to the Stanger Siva Sungum Hall in KwaDukuza and allegedly dropped two buckets loaded with faeces at the entrance.

The Independent Online reported that the ANCYL leadership from the informal settlement had also organised 10 minibuses to ferry crowds of people to disrupt the event.

The news website quoted Lucky Mbokazi, one of the organisers, as saying the buckets of faeces were dropped to voice their displeasure against entrepreneurs who are preventing a mall in KwaDukuza from being constructed.

He said their action was not aimed at Gordhan.

ANC spokeswoman Khusela Sangoni last night said they condemn “in the harshest possible terms any events of intolerance”.

“Comrade Pravin Gordhan, like all other members of the organisation, has a right to speak where he is deployed and we should never have a situation where comrades are prevented to do so,” she said.

“We also call upon the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal to investigate these allegations and if any member of the organisation is found to be in the wrong, we trust that proper disciplinary processes will be taken against them.”
