Obey Tarry the Liege lord
Yeni to shine at Flamingo Park
“If you can’t be good all the time, be good at the right time,” trainer Sean Tarry said candidly shortly after winning this year’s Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup with 16-1 shot Liege, a five-year-old Dynasty gelding who finished fourth in this race last year.
The wet weather experienced on Saturday resulted in the meeting being postponed to Sunday, due to unsafe underfoot conditions. As a result, Sunday's meeting was entrance free, therefore, the public was treated to two great events, for the price of one! It was glitz and glamour at the course on Saturday, courtesy of the many celebrities who made appearances. These included Sinazo Yolwa (Real Goboza presenter) and Nambitha Mpumlwana (former Generations actress) just to name a few.
The weather couldn’t rain on the show’s parade: performances and the promised carnival and kids entertainment also took place. Plus the many marquees hosted after parties that went on through the night!
The Tarry yard hasn’t been in the best of form, but they are known to win the big ones, and Cup day was no different. Liege jumped out of the gates perfectly and was midfield, placed behind leaders Crowd Pleaser, Let it Rain, Girl On The Run and Social Order.
Approaching the 600m, Liege was impressively passing runners with every stride.
He switched to another gear at the 300m, skipping clear of opposition to win by 2.25-lengths.
Fort Ember (Gunter Wrogemann) held on long enough to deny Coral Fever (Muzi Yeni) second place. The Quartet was rounded off by tote favourite Pagoda who made late progress.
“I've run third in the Summer Cup before and I'm glad to go two better,” said an excited Danielson.
He had hope for Liege, stating “I didn't look at his last run, I looked at the previous ones, I thought he had a small chance.
“We had a lot of confidence in this race, but there was no explanation for his last run, in fact there was no explanation at all,” said Tarry.
Racing is at Flamingo Park today, and the man to follow is Muzi ‘king of the sand’ Yeni.
He makes for a great double to take, and funny enough, both horse dead-heated for first place in their last outing!
The first being Pont Gard in Race 4, a gelding who is lightly weighted (55kg) and well-drawn in 2.
He promises further improvement and is PA banker material.
A banker in all bets follows when Yeni rides hat-trick hopeful Silent Starship in Race 8.
