Party time for matrics

Joy as 12-year school careers come to an end

- By Yoliswa Sobuwa

There were screams, hugging, tears and signing of school shirts in most of Gauteng schools as some Grade 12 pupils wrote their last exam – English paper 3 – yesterday.

After 12 years of schooling – and more for those who repeated grades – most matric pupils said they just wanted to let loose.

Plans for post-exams parties – dubbed “pens-down” – to celebrate this milestone are afoot.

At Randfontein High School on the West Rand, some teachers shed tears as they hugged and bade their charges farewell.

The matrics at this school gave away their shoes and uniforms to the less fortunate.

Lurhan Maraba, 18, chairman of Representative Council of Learners, said it was important to share the spirit of kindness and solidarity.

“We have collected more than 200 pairs of school shoes and different items of school uniform. These will be given to pupils who need them here at school and in our community,” Maraba said. He added that he would be preparing for a public debate on the environment.

One of the organisers of the pens-down party at Da’Side party venue in Randfontein, Precious Motingwe, 18, said tickets would range from R80 to R300 for VIP.

Performers will include Riky Rick, Black Motion, Twins on Decks and local DJs.

“Our parents should not worry about us. We will drink responsibly, I mean we are 18 after all,” she said.

Malerato Kgokong, 20, of Mosupatsela Secondary in Kagiso said her last day was about the signing of shirts.

“It’s not easy to say goodbye to friends, but as remembrance we have signed each other’s shirts. We will be partying and drinking waya waya (all the way),” she said.

In Meadowlands, Matebogo Ntwayakgosi, 21, of Matseliso High School said their party would be at Zone 2 park.

“It’s nothing serious. We will bring our cooler boxes and chairs and have fun,” she said.
