Ubuntu confident of knocking out AmaZulu

NFD team eager to show win over top-tier Polokwane was no fluke

Having already showed their giant-killing aptitude by knocking Polokwane City out of the Nedbank Cup in the first round, Ubuntu Cape Town want the scalp of another Premiership side when they face AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium tonight (8pm).

Ubuntu shot to prominence last month when they beat top-flight side City 2-1, eliminating them in the first round.

The National First Division (NFD) side’s captain Malcolm Jacobs, 27, feels that a win against AmaZulu would prove their capability of beating any club in the competition.

“We want to show that beating Polokwane City was not a fluke. I believe that if we can beat AmaZulu, we can beat any team in this cup. I am positive if we play the way we did against Polokwane, we will beat AmaZulu,” Jacobs said.

“We have identified their weak points. Our preparations have gone well. It will be the matter of executing our plan into perfection.”

Since their victory over Rise and Shine last month, Ubuntu have not lost in their last three league fixtures.

They have beaten Pretoria University (3-1) and Mthatha Bucks (1-0), drawing 1-1 with Stellenbosch.

“That victory [over Polokwane] contributed to our confidence. It also inspired us to have a good run in the league. We’ve now moved away from the relegation zone [they are number 12 on the log] all thanks to our high morale,” noted Jacobs who has featured in 15 league matches this season.

Jacobs joined Ubuntu from Mbombela United at the start of the season. The Cape Town-born goalkeeper is looking up to Maritzburg United and Kaizer Chiefs goalminders Richards Ofori and Itumeleng Khune respectively.
