Molekwa looks back with pride

City coach survives first year in hot seat

Polokwane City coach Bernard Molekwa has survived a year at the club, but he’s the first to admit he could have done better.

Molekwa was put in charge when Luc Eymael, who is now with Free State Stars, resigned last season.

Molekwa’s first outing was a goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns on March 14 last year, so he completed a year yesterday.

Molekwa has won 12 matches in all competitions, drawn 14 and lost 13. Some of his highlights include beating Kaizer Chiefs last season and doing the double over Sundowns in this campaign.

“I believe I could have done better, especially in terms of the wins margin, because there are games I believe we could have won and we ended up losing or drawing,” said Molekwa.

“But so far, since it’s my first year of coaching, it’s not a bad record. I believe that there is room for improvement.”

He’s encouraged that the club management and players have backed him all the time.

“Credit must go to the club for believing in me. The road that I took was not easy, but through the support of the chairman [Johnny Mogaladi], the management, technical team and the players, it’s been good and it’s still good.”

After finishing sixth last season, the challenge for Molekwa is to get the team in the top eight again. They sit 11th with seven matches remaining and it won’t be easy because their next match is against the in-form Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium tomorrow [8pm].
