PSL tries to hype up dead final

- By Sihle Ndebele

Since Maritzburg United and Free State Stars were confirmed as Nedbank Cup finalists at the 55 000-seater Cape Town Stadium, there had been fears that these two clubs might not fill up this Mother City venue tomorrow (7pm).

The topic around this matter has also led to some opining that perhaps it would be better the final venue is not announced until the finalists are known. In a week where Tendai Ndoro’s ineligibility saga and Mamelodi Sundowns match against Barcelona hogged attention, the Ke Yona decider now takes the centre stage.

Yesterday, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) released a statement, pleading with the Capetonians to rally behind the two teams tomorrow.

“There is an opportunity for the people of the Western Cape to adopt a side and rally behind that club. You have many elements on the day including the fact that you have a Cape Town-born Fadlu Davids coaching on his first cup final in front of his home crowd. And, you have a Free State Stars that have shown a lot of guts to travel this far,” said PSL chief executive Mato Madlala in the statement.

Maritzburg assistant coach Maahier Davids told the Sowetan that the atmosphere in the Mother City was “amazing”.

“It’s amazing, you can feel it that the final will be staged in this city. The atmosphere is amazing, the Capetonians speak highly of this final... they love their football,” said Davids.

“The Nedbank people have done very well to market this game. It’s all green here… everyone is happy.”
