A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a police officer‚ Constable Motlalentoa Mahlatsi‚ who was killed on the East Rand last week.

Police yesterday said a 32year-old suspect had been arrested on Saturday in Germiston. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Mahlatsi was killed while attending to a complaint in Elsburg‚ Germiston. Three other suspects were arrested last week in connection with the killing.

Police said one of them had been linked to the murder of another police officer in April.

The suspects will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today.

Meanwhile, an Uber driver in Port Elizabeth was the victim of an attempted hijacking on Saturday night when a “customer” held him up at gunpoint during a ride between Humewood and Mount Pleasant.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the 30-year-old driver picked up the suspect in Humewood.

“On the way, the 24-year-old suspect pulled out a firearm and pointed [it] at the driver. He was ordered to stop and to get out of his car,” said Naidu.

The driver was robbed of his cellphone outside the vehicle.

“As the suspect walked towards the vehicle [to drive away] the Uber driver ran after him and a scuffle ensued. Shots went off and the suspect sustained three gunshot wounds. He’s under police guard in hospital,” Naidu said.
