Justin Snaith continued his impressive dominance of South African horseracing by collecting more silverware on Saturday courtesy of Doublemint’s impressive triumph in the Grade 3 Highlands Stud Winter Derby at Kenilworth. There were ‘staying’ doubts because of the heavy going, and was reflected such was represented in the betting. This son of Twice Over drifted from 16-10 to a generous 2-1. That didn’t matter, this gelding impressively passed Spring Man like he was standing still at the 300m marker to win by an extending 3.25 lengths under Hong Kong-bound Grant van Niekerk. Spring Man (5-1) stayed on well for second and was followed by Ballad Of The Sea (22-1) and Love Happens (6-1). The remainder of the field was beaten by more than eight lengths! It should pay to follow Doublemint going forward; Van Niekerk reckons he is a definite Grade 1 contender. Peoples’ banker Fresnaye showed tremendous heart when justifying 9-10 favouritism, defeating her stable companion Dynasty’s Blossom (11-1) by 0.30 lengths in the Highlands Stud Winter Oaks (Listed) over 2200m. Donovan Dillon looked to have the race in the bag under Dynasty’s Blossom, but Bernard Fayd’Herbe had other ideas, producing a masterful ride to score by a neck. Vaughan Marshall-trained One World extended his unbeaten record to three starts when making light work of rivals in the R200 000 Listed Highlands Stud Langerman – winning by an easy 5.25 lengths. “He was very impressive,” said jockey MJ Byleveld. ”He has a good action so I decided to use it, and once he quickened at the top of the straight it was all over.” Marshall saddled Tap O’ Noth to victory in this very race last year. Perhaps the Guineas is on the cards for One World too. Make sure you follow this two-year-old! Ultra-consistent, but expensive maiden to follow Frank Lloyd Wright had to settle with second, and was followed by record-breaking R6 million yearling Charles who was a further 6.50 lengths behind. Racing is at Flamingo Park today and Corrie Lensley-trained Speed Monitor appears a worthy Pick 6 banker in Race 7, a MR 69 Handicap over 1600m.
