Striker aims to help Ajax into PSL

Having not scored since joining Ajax Cape Town from Royal Eagles at the start of last season, 2016/2017 National First Division (NFD) top-scorer Sedwyn George reckons his goal drought is a reflection of the Urban Warriors’ plummet of last term.

George, 26, joined Ajax high in spirit after he had netted 20 goals to win the NFD’s Golden Boot Award but he has been struggling to replicate his Eagles form in the Mother City.

“The expectations were high when I joined Ajax because I had done well at Eagles. I think

Sedwyn George has struggled with goal-scoring form since joining Ajax Cape Town. because the team itself was not doing well played a role in my struggles last season,” George told Sowetan yesterday.

“We were fighting for survival and ended up being relegated, so it was not an easy situation for me as it was my first season in the Premiership. I cannot score goals when the team is in a slump.”

However, George is optimistic he will rediscover his old form in the NFD this season, pinning his hopes on his experience in this league.

“At least I am familiar with the NFD, that makes me believe I will soon rediscover my old form. But, at the moment my priority is to consolidate my place in the starting line-up,” said George.

While he would welcome a second NFD Golden Boot gong, George insisted his main focus was on the collective objective of helping the club return to the PSL.

“A Golden Boot would be a blessing but my focus is to win things with the team. Our goal is to bounce back to the Premiership and we believe it’s possible,” noted George.
