Benni can add nail to Masutha coffin

City coach on the up while axe hovers over rival

While Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy is in a celebratory mood, the same cannot be said of his Black Leopards counterpart Joel Masutha, ahead of their clash at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday (3pm).

The former Bafana Bafana striker now holds a Uefa Pro Licence after a recent graduation and is looking forward to putting his coaching skills to the test again, this time against Lidoda Duvha, who have lost all five away matches this season.

“Leopards are sound technically and can cause problems if we are not organised,” McCarthy told the media.

“If we take them lightly and think they are just a newly promoted team, without having to do our homework and work hard, then I think we are going to come second best.”

The Citizens beat AmaZulu 3-0 in their last encounter, while Leopards lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs in their midweek clash in Johannesburg.

Leopards’s defeat is not good news for Masutha, who has the axe hovering over his head. The Limpopo side are apparently ready to sack him, but he maintained after the loss to Chiefs that he believed the club’s management were patient.

“You are putting me in the corner now. I don’t know [if they are patient], but I believe so,” Masutha said.

The former goalkeeper is still holding on to his belief that Leopards will turn things around sooner rather than later.

“Last season, Maritzburg United went eight games without a win but they still finished in the top eight. It depends on how people perceive things and the only time I would relax is when I’m my own boss, like Jomo [Sono].

“But now people demand results and it’s understandable. You can’t change those things,” Masutha admitted.
