Pitch Black Afro to ap­pear in court to­day

Hip-hop artist Pitch Black Afro has been ar­rested in con­nec­tion with the death of his wife.

The rap­per’s wife, Cather­ine “Tr­isha” Modis­ane, 41, died on De­cem­ber 31 2018. Ac­cord­ing to a source, Pitch Black Afro – real name Thu­lani Ng­cobo – phoned po­lice af­ter his wife died at a B&B ac­com­mo­da­tion in Yeoville, Jo­han­nes­burg. Pre­lim­i­nary in­ves­ti­ga­tions found that she had died of nat­u­ral causes. An in­quest docket was opened. How­ever, the pathol­o­gist lead­ing the case later found she had died from un­nat­u­ral causes and a mur­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion was sub­se­quently ini­ti­ated. Ng­cobo’s man­ager Bheki Mlambo said he did not know the de­tails of Modis­ane’s death but said she would be buried to­mor­row. Her me­mo­rial ser­vice will be held on Satur­day in Mead­ow­lands, Soweto. “I found out about her death in the new year. The fam­ily does not have an of­fi­cial state­ment yet be­cause they are still meet­ing on the mat­ter.” Mlambo would not di­vulge Ng­cobo’s where­abouts but said he would not be able to speak to the me­dia. Colonel Lun­gelo Dlamini said yes­ter­day the case was un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion. “There was an in­quest opened but we changed that to mur­der. The sus­pect is be­ing de­tained at Yeoville po­lice sta­tion and will be ap­pear­ing in the Hill­brow mag­is­trate’s court [to­day].”

Pitch Black Afro shot to fame in 2004 with the re­lease of a hugely pop­u­lar al­bum Styling Gel, which fea­tured hits like Pitch Black Afro and Mato­fotofo. In a 2007 hit Neva Let U Go he sings the praises of Tr­isha who he men­tions by name in the song, say­ing only death will sep­a­rate them. His last al­bum, Inte’mnandi, came out in 2014.
