There’s merit to Kolisi’s take on transformation

-

I thought I wouldn’t say anything about the Siya Kolisi saga, for lack of a better word, but I feel the need to say something.

Reading what I have read on social media and in opinion letters, it is very evident that people want to deliberately misrepresent what Kolisi has said.

Kolisi clearly says people shouldn’t just push numbers in the name of transformation. He says the work must start at grassroots level (townships). As an example, how many rugby fields and clubs do we have in Soweto?

A lot of black people do not even watch or understand the game. Why are we so obsessed with colour, though?

Kolisi is right when he says, “I wouldn’t want to be picked because of my skin colour”. It is clear for all to see that even black players end up doubting their own abilities because of quotas.

Kolisi is captain of the Springboks. Is it because of his ability or because it was time we had a black captain? The main criterion in choosing a player or coach to represent the country should be ability and not colour and quotas. Zakes Nakedi
