Marcus to dominate at Scottsville

Top jockey and trainer Goosen could be profitable to follow

- By Racing Editor

Followers of top-flight jockey Anton Marcus could have a profitable time at Scottsville today, as he will be aboard quite a few bright prospects on the eight-race card.

He is unlikely to miss in Race 1 when teamed up with Michael Miller-trained Bound By Duty in a 1000m Juvenile Plate. After two wins in barrier trials, the colt justified cramped odds with a fine win on debut over 800m at this course. He rates a BiPot banker.

Race 3, a 1400m Maiden Plate, should see Marcus in the winner’s enclosure aboard Garth Puller-trained Mana Santana. This three-year-old showed strong pace last time when second over 1600m and could go one better over the shorter distance.

Tony Rivalland-trained Extravargant (Marcus) will be in warm order when stepping out in Race 5, a MR 68 Handicap (F&M) over 1200m. This three-year-old was a fast-finishing second on debut at Greyville. Then backed in her subsequent outing with Stuart Randolph aboard again she won smartly over today’s course and distance. Louis Goosen-trained Captain’s Girl (Marcus) will be the one to beat in Race 6, a 1000m Pinnacle Stakes. Marcus partnered this five-time winner once and that was in September when she won with authority over this course and distance. This 1000m specialist was unplaced once and that was in her most recent outing when stepping up the distance to 1200m in the Marula Sprint at the Greyville Polytrack.

Her main rivals are Autumn In Seattle, Hashtag Strat and Calvary.

Marcus will be aboard another lively candidate in Goosen-trained Unilateral who contests Race 7, a Maiden Plate (F&M) over 1950m. This three-year-old lacked experience on debut when unplaced over 1400m. However, she was placed in her three subsequent runs over more ground. He had the ride last time when third out of 13 over the course and distance. The combination deserves the utmost respect.
