Ex-Chiefs defender confident of win

Though Magic FC assistant coach David Kannemeyer admits Kaizer Chiefs’ derby performance was much improved, the former Amakhosi defender has identified a chink in the armour to exploit. Amakhosi were unable to snap their winless streak against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium but the team gave a better account of themselves at the weekend. Kannemeyer, who played for Chiefs between 2001 and 2004, hopes to lead Magic to an upset win over the Soweto giants in the Nedbank Cup last 16 in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

“They had George [Maluleka] as the holding midfielder [in the derby] which I don’t think is his strongest position. “I played with George at SuperSport, so I know him. We’ll capitalise on that.” The 41-year-old former defender works alongside former Bafana Bafana striker George Dearnaley (technical director and head coach) and Zane Alexander (former Cape Town Spurs midfielder). The ABC Motsepe League outfit feel they are in with a chance after Chiefs struggled to put away fellow third-tier team Tornado in the last 32. “They should be worried because they know nothing about us.”

He concedes that the defensive wall of Ernst Middendorp will be hard to break down. “Middendorp is a German coach and we know they are good at defensive structures and are disciplined,” he said. With 36 points from 17 games, Magic are second in the 16-team Cape Town division of the ABC Motsepe League with Steenberg United on top with 43 points from 18 games.
