Scholarship puts Sonwabile within reach of dreams

- By Patience Bambalele

The sky is the limit for Eastern Cape-born model and aspiring actor Sonwabile Gingqishe, who has landed an international scholarship.

The former petrol attendant flies to the New York Film Academy in the US to study film and acting after receiving a three-year grant. He impressed at the Applause Rising Talent Showcase International in Florida, US, last year.

“The scholarship came as a shock to me, it was like a dream because I never expected it since I never went to an acting or modelling school,” said Gingqishe.

“But being part of the talent show got me closer to that dream.”

Gingqishe performed before a panel of judges that included Blaze Johnson, Nace Butler, Kim Meyers and casting director at Tyler Perry studios, Rhavynn Drummer.

Now working as a talent scout at Just You Modelling and Artist Management in Johannesburg, he wants to revive arts and culture in townships and village schools through his foundation.

He is determined to make his dream come true despite financial challenges. His scholarship only covers tuition.

The model has been knocking on different doors trying to get funding. He says for accommodation, food and transport he would need between R200,000 and R500,000 a year.

“It is important for me to go to US because I want to create job opportunities in my community. Since I came back from Florida I have visited different schools teaching modelling and acting.”

Gingqishe says the academy in US does not only focus on performing arts but also empowers one with other skills.

His trip to Florida was funded by different businesses, the Eastern Cape sport, arts and recreation, MG Mali Attorneys, the Raymond Mhlaba municipality, and Total garage, among others.
