Basadi Faith breaks Pick 6 bankers’ hearts

Bank on Muzi to deliver Ataturk

- By Racing Editor

Paul Matchett-trained Basadi Faith sent punters Turffontein Pick 6 tickets straight to the trashcan in the very first leg when making an absolute mockery of a quality field in Saturday’s Listed Ruffian Stakes over 1000m, skipping a mind-boggling 4.50 lengths clear of the highly rated, Gin Fizz.

Gin Fizz, a daughter of Soft Falling Rain who following a 7.40-length debut success was dubbed a confident banker by many tipsters. Matchett’s two-year-old daughter of Master Of My Fate led from startto-finish and jockey Devin Habib even had the time to salute aboard this 6-1 fancy passing the 50m marker. This was her third consecutive triumph so it’s advised you back this filly until she gets beat! Matchett saddled three of the five Listed race winners, and interestingly, only a single favourite was victorious on the 10-race card, a major reason why the Pick 6 paid a cool R1.1 million.

The one favourite who did win, 11-10 Frosted Gold under Gavin Lerena, was forced to share the spoils after dead-heating with the Matchett-trained 14-1 Twilight Moon (Dennis Schwarz) in the R150 000 Listed Storm Bird Stakes over the minimum distance.

This marked the in-form Lerena’s 100th winner of the season, and he went on to add two more to his rising tally, steering Sunshine Silk (Race 5) and Old Man Tyme (Race 9) to victory.

The Listed Derby Trial was anybody’s race passing the 150m marker. Runners were spread right across the track, but it was underrated jockey Marco van Rensburg who got the maximum out of his mount, Gift For The Gap, defeating a fast-finishing Last Of The Legend by a commanding 0.50 lengths with Master Magic making up a tremendous amount of ground to deny Seattle Force of third place.

That Quartet paid a spine-tingling R18 618!

“Bize is an unknown quantity, even to us,” admitted conditioner Alec Laird minutes before the running of the Listed Oaks Trial. “But she’s a lovely, big, strong filly with a lovely action.”

Bize impressively overcame a shocking draw to maintained her unbeaten record in the R150 000 contest over 2000m, defeating 3310 favourite Seville by a comfortable 1.90 lengths under apprentice jockey Kabelo Matsunyane.

Sean Tarry saddled the first two runners past the post in the R225 000 Klawervlei Farm Sale Stakes over 1250m at Durbanville with Rock The Globe (Aldo Domeyer) defeating Immeasurable (Greg Cheyne) by 2.50 lengths.

Pick 6 players can banker the Ataturk when he lines up in a MR 58 Handicap over 1600m at Flamingo Park today.
