Annual Sam Buti Walk promises to be bigger and better

Participants will pound Alex streets

-

The fourth annual Reverend Dr Sam Buti Fun Walk promises to be bigger and better as organisers are targeting a record number of participants.

On the morning of Saturday September 14, the community of Alexandra will join the Uniting Reformed Church in association with Fat Cats Athletic Club to walk the legacy of Rev Dr Sam Buti.

The fun walk is a tribute from the church and a community that he served so tirelessly and selflessly for close to five decades.

Walkers will pound the streets of Alexandra in the 6.6km route that will start at the Uniting Reformed Church at the corner of Rev Sam Buti Street and 5th Avenue and end at Altrec Sports Ground in Eastbank. Tickets are R50 per person.

Event director and church spokesperson Mpho Mothapo said: “The church, as the spiritual vessel for the community of Alexandra, must not only be seen to be preaching the gospel but also to serve as an enabler through the proceeds that will be generated from the funds raised from the walk.”

Fat Cats Athletic Club chairperson Refiloe Rakwena said: “Fat Cats has been privileged to honour the revered clergy by partnering with the church over the last three years.

We are a multi-faceted social club founded on principles of family and community, and it is for this reason that we champion a cause such as the Sam Buti Fun Walk.

Join our members by walking the route. There will also be an aerobics session at the finish.” – Sowetan Reporter
