Onesie should grant Luna’s Wish in PE

Fayd’Herbe the jockey to follow

- By Racing Editor

The Grade 2 Post Merchants will headline proceedings at Greyville’s Turf track tonight and although he returns from a lengthy 111-day stint off the racetrack, it should pay decently to side with the Justin Snaith-trained Kasimir when he reunites with jockey Richard Fourie in this 1200m contest.

This son of Captain Al is the model of consistency and will attempt to register a third consecutive triumph, having ended the Cape Town feature race season on an unparalleled high – proving he is arguably the best sprinter South Africa has to offer right now.

This four-year-old was successful in the Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship in his penultimate performance and followed that up with an equally impressive triumph in the Grade 2 Diadem Stakes, defeating Speedpoint – who shouldered 2kg less – by a gutsy 0.05 lengths over tonight’s trip.

If Kasimir brings that same mentality to the racetrack, he will be very hard to peg back, despite shouldering top-weight of 62kg and jumping from a wide No 11 draw in this 14-horse field.

His 1200m record is most inspiring having competed seven times for three triumphs and just as many seconds!

This gelding made an absolute mockery of his main danger, Bold Respect, in their last three encounters and should have no trouble confirming superiority despite carrying 2kg more.

Brett Crawford’s charge was last seen in the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, where he represented himself well, finishing 1.45 lengths behind the Sean Tarry-trained Chimichuri Run. That form line has produced a winner and Bold Respect’s case is further strengthened by the fact he is smartly drawn at No 6.

Fairview will host the Listed Port Elizabeth Gold Cup over 3600m today – the country’s longest race.

It appears hat-trick hopeful, Onesie, from the Jacques Strydom yard is the right horse to back. This son of Ideal World overcame the worst of draws in his most recent effort, defeating Frikkie – who renews rivalry – by an extending 3.50 lengths over 2200m.

This five-year-old mare was a runway victor over 3200m at this venue in her penultimate start so staying is not a concern.

Eight-year-old hard knocker Ovidio looks the main threat. His most recently third-place finish strongly suggests he is ready to register an eighth career win. He gets the services of Bernard Fayd’Herbe and jumps from an advantageous No 4 draw.

Float Ovidio and Onesie with as many runners as your budget allows in your Quartet.

Fayd’Herbe should also be seen in the winner’s enclosure with Luna Wish following the running of Race 6, the Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes over 1400m.
