Mobbie still cagey about Downs move

Defender also linked to City, Wits

Mamelodi Sundowns have set their sights on Free State Stars right-back Nyiko Mobbie, Sowetan can confirm.

The 24-year-old was cagey when asked about the imminent deal.

“What I can say is that as a player, I don’t know anything. The one who knows is Rantsi Mokoena (Stars general manager). I’m just at home (in Limpopo) relaxing and I don’t think about football. It’s off season,” Mobbie said.

Mokoena couldn’t be reached for comment and Mobbie couldn’t give much away, even when pressed to do so.

“Rumours are rumours. People can talk and sometimes they lie, but I don’t know anything,” he added.

Our sources, however, insisted that Mobbie would be turning out for the Brazilians in the 2019/2020 campaign.

“There’s a lot of interest in him. He was mentioned at Cape Town City, but nothing really came out of it and then there was Bidvest Wits in the picture,” said our source.

“But I can tell you now, Sundowns are definitely the favourites to sign him.”

Mobbie’s teammate Makhehlene Makhaula is also on the move. The 29-year-old was thought to be on the verge of completing a deal with Chippa United, but Highlands Park have emerged as the favourites to sign him.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg United are moving at a fast speed to ensure they avoid fighting relegation next season, after surviving via the PSL promotion play-offs this time. This was after they finished 15th.

After confirming that they have secured a two-year extension with coach Eric Tinkler, they have now signed defender Kwanda Mngonyama from Cape Town City.

This comes after they also sealed a permanent deal for striker Judas Moseamedi, who was on loan from the Citizens.
