Top players who crossed from SuperSport to rivals
If Mamelodi Sundowns emerge successful in their pursuit of Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena, it would add to the long list of players who have made the switch between the two Tshwane clubs. Below, Gomolemo Motshwane looks at the top five players who jumped ship from Matsatsantsa a Pitori to Chloorkop.
Elias Pelembe
Domingues was arguably the best player in the country when he made his move from United to Downs in 2009.
In his prime, the Mozambican was an explosive winger who left even the best defenders bewildered.
Pelembe, who is currently at Bidvest Wits, will go down as one of the best footballers from his homeland to ever play in South Africa.
Anthony Laffor
The Liberian, who had success at United with multiple championships, continued to have more success at Sundowns. Laffor arrived at Chloorkop in January 2012, a year before Pitso Mosimane made his way there. He has won every title there is to win in SA and also has a CAF Champions League winner’s medal.
Katlego Mphela
During his time at Sundowns, from 2008 to 2014, Mphela was a reliable goalscoring machine. Nicknamed “Killer” for his ruthlessness in front of goals, Mphela was at some time the best South African striker. Since leaving Kaizer Chiefs in 2015, the 34-year-old Britsborn striker’s career has gone into the wilderness.
Tebogo Langerman
The former Bafana regular arrived at Sundowns in 2012 with few expectations that he would be a pillar at left-back. Langerman has seen the club sign many players over the years but he remains the specialist defender on the left. He has also won multiple championships and the sort-after Champions League.
Jeremy Brockie
When Downs signed Brockie, he was the hottest striker in the PSL at the time after scoring 54 goals for SuperSport from January 2015 until his departure in January 2018. The New Zealander, however, struggled to adapt at Downs and has fallen out of favour. The 31-year-old has been linked with a move away after an indifferent season-and-ahalf there.
