Banker Missisippi Burning in everything!

Kelpie goes for fourth straight win

- By Racing Editor

Big risk, even bigger reward.

This is the mentality every punter needs to adopt when structuring a Pick 6.

Because bankers are hard to find on today’s Kenilworth eight-race card, one will have to take a risk and banker the Adam Marcus-trained Missisippi Burning in Race 4, a FM 86 Handicap over 1200m on the Winter Course.

This Captain Al filly has won two of her last three performances by a combined nine lengths, so she is no slouch.

There was particularly something special about the manner in which she quickened in the dying stages when outclassing Bindi by 6.50 lengths over the minimum trip at this venue last time out.

This three-year-old should relish the extra 200m of today’s event and although stepping up in class, she gets 0.5kg from main danger Ikebana and on recent performances should be very hard to peg back.

Race 6, a MR 81 Handicap over 1600m looks a two-horse race between Golden Ducat and Pinkerton.

Although the latter, an expensive R3 million son of Dynasty, was getting expensive to follow – running a place in three of first four starts – he produced glimpses of superiority when making light work of a decent field to justify 2-10 favouritism by 2.25 lengths over 1400m recently.

“This looks like a decent horse and I think he is definitely one worth following,” assistant trainer Jonathan Snaith advised the public.

“He won with a little bit in hand and quite easily. He was a little bit disappointing previously. We thought he would win his penultimate, but we bumped into a really decent horse (Kilindini).

“He has been frustrating, but there is a lot more to come from this horse, especially over a mile (1600m) and further.”

The good news is that Pinkerton shoulders 1.5kg less than his main danger and joint 1710 favourite Golden Ducat at 55.5kg.

Interestingly, Golden Ducat is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winners Hawwaam and Rainbow Bridge!

This Eric Sands-trained son of Philanthropist followed up his promising debut third with a flawless triumph over 1400m at this course, producing a devastating turn of foot to beat Turn It Up Harvey by an extending 1.75 lengths.

Jockey S’manga Khumalo rode him on that occasion and will retain the ride.

Sands couldn’t help but sing the colt’s praises, stating: “I really think he is going to be a really top horse.

“But he has got his issues,” he admitted. “Mary (Slack, of Wilgersbosdrift) didn’t think he would ever see a racecourse at one stage so I’m really happy he is here. We just hope he goes from strength to strength.”

Include both Pinkerton and Golden Ducat in your Pick 6.

You will not get filthy rich, but consider floating the pair with the field in a Quartet and putting those winnings on Kelpie in Race 7.

She is in the form of her life and will attempt to register a fourth consecutive victory. She gets the services of jockey Anton Marcus.
