Ke Yona semis set scene for thrilling PSL season wrap

- Neville Khoza

Given the fact that it has been more than four months without competitive football, the Nedbank Cup semifinals at the weekend were good to the eye and should set the tone for the rest of the season.

Many would have thought that the quality of matches would be poor when football returned at the weekend, but those matches left a lot of fans feeling excited about what lies ahead.

The match that caught the eye for many and left fans talking even now was the thriller between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits at Orlando Stadium where the Brazilians won 3-2.

What more could one have asked for than to get five goals?

The first match between Baroka FC and Bloemfontein Celtic also didn’t disappoint, producing three goals.

With Sundowns winning later on that day, it set up a final between Phunya Sele Sele and the Brazilians, which would make for a great conclusion to the season with the cup final.

Although it looked like a onesided affair after Baroka were reduced to 10 men earlier in the match to see Celtic win 3-0, the quality was also something to write home about and one may argue that had it stayed 11 v 11 we would have seen some fightback from Baroka later on.

In both matches, it wouldn’t have been far-fetched to suggest or expect that players would be tired resulting in a scrappy affair, especially in the second half, but the quality didn’t drop much and it left many eyes fixed on TV screens.

The teams should also be commended for giving their all despite playing in an empty stadium.

With two key fixtures coming this week, Sundowns v Orlando Pirates tonight at Dobsonville Stadium and Kaizer Chiefs v Wits at Orlando Stadium tomorrow, more thrilling matches could be on the cards if the weekend semifinal fixtures are anything to go by.

It is safe to say the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is back with a bang and in the next few weeks fans can expect twists and turns in the Absa Premiership title race and relegation battle.
