Goss returns to face Chiefs in key league clash

Wits No1 goalie sat out a suspension in cup fixture

Ricardo Goss is set to reclaim his place in the starting line-up when Bidvest Wits meet Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership match at Orlando Stadium tomorrow (6pm).

Following Brighton Mhlongo two costly errors when Wits lost 2-3 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semifinal at the weekend, Goss who has since served his four-match ban, could take his place in the starting XI.

Goss was charged with assault together with Sameehg Doutie following an altercation with match referee Masixole Bambiso during a heated 2-0 defeat to Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium in January.

“I’m excited to be back. Finally, I can start training to push for my place in the team rather than training knowing that you are suspended,” Goss told Sowetan yesterday

“I feel disappointed the way we lost the match in the semifinal. We lost through our mistakes and we were eyeing to go all the way in the competition. We feel a little bit disappointed but you can’t win all your games, you win some and you lose some you just have to learn from it.

“We still have the league to play for and we want to push as much as we can.”

The 26-year-old keeper who will be joining Sundowns at the end of the current season also had some sympathy for his fellow keeper Mhlongo following his errors on Saturday.

Mhlongo was responsible for the second and third goals Sundowns scored as he could have done better in both. The second goal, he came out of his line only to be beaten by Keletso Makgalwa to score before he failed to save Lyle Lekay’s free kick in the dying minutes of the match.

“We speak a lot, it was just unfortunate for him he hasn’t played in a while, and just to come into a game like Sundowns it was always going to be difficult,” Goss said.

“But I think the defenders could have covered him a bit you know. At the end of the day, it is football I’ve spoken to him and he is ready to go again.”

Goss added that they will need to redeem themselves against Chiefs following their defeat to Sundowns.

“We know it is another big one, after losing to Sundowns I thought everyone will be down but the guys are looking good to go again. It is a loss but we’ve learned a lot from it and we will push ourselves and give it our all again.

“I also feel like we controlled the Sundowns game and I feel like we deserve to win it. But that’s football if you don’t score enough you won’t win games. Hopefully, we can score goals and we defend against Chiefs.”
