Victory moves Chippa out of danger zone

Seema says things went according to plan

Augustin Kwem’s goal in the 1-0 win over Baroka at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday evening has provided Chippa United some breathing space as they continue their fight for Absa Premiership survival.

The 25-year-old Kwem’s seventh minute strike was good enough to see the Port Elizabeth club through to their seventh win of the season.

It was a fighting performance that will have given the side a major boost for their remaining three games.

Chippa are now six points clear of the danger zone.

But, for Baroka, the loss saw the Limpopo side slide deeper into the relegation slots.

Speaking after his first win as the Chilli Boys’ coach, Lehlohonolo Seema said he was motivated even more by the result.

“The game panned out the way we expected,” said Seema. “We always knew that it was going to be a difficult game against Baroka.

We are happy with the result, but you could see that it was not the type of football we normally play. We had to do what we had to do which was to defend.

“It was good that we got an early goal, it’s exactly how we planned it. We told ourselves if we cannot win this game, let us at least get a draw. But if we score first, let’s make sure that we push all the way to defend that lead and that’s exactly what we did.”

The former Bloemfontein Celtic mentor said he was happy for his players because they had something to show for the hard work they put in during the 95 minutes of play.

Although they are only three points away from the top eight spot, the coach said their focus was on survival and nothing else.

“We are not looking at the top eight per se. We are just trying to take one game at a time and make sure that we move far away from the relegation zone.

“We are looking forward to playing Stellenbosch in our next game on Friday.”
