- By Patience Bambalele

Veteran radio personality Bob Mabena might be late but his music still tops local music charts.

Mabena, 51, died last month after he suffered a cardiac arrest, just four weeks after his compilation album Jammers House 1 was released.

The album that features classic hits is sitting at No. 2 on Musica’s Top 40 CD charts, according to his record company Gallo Records.

The company further confirmed that the album got nearly 200,000 streams, with 90% of support coming from SA audiences.

Jammers House 1 also appears on seven digital playlists, including on Repeat and Daily Mix Spotify, with the most popular track being Moloko’s classic song Sing It Back (Herbert’s Tasteful Dub Mix).

Gallo sales and product manager Goodwill Nkuna said: “It is humbling for the team at Gallo to see so much love shown for the legendary Bob Mabena.

“We would like to thank his fans and lovers of music in general for supporting Jammer’s House 1.”

Other classic hits on the album are Holdin On by Michael Watford, Something Got Me Started by Simply Red, I Love The Way You Love Me by Nayobe and Out of the Storm by Incognito. Gallo said music compilers were hungry for Mabena’s music before it was officially released.

Mabena said about the album before he died: “Each track is guaranteed to evoke fantastic memories of the early freedom years and the liberation of South Africa’s airwaves that saw the likes of household house music DJs such as DJ Fresh, DJ Monde, DJ Iggy Smalls dominate the house music genre in South Africa.”
