Micho slips into SA for sexual assault case
Former Pirates coach goes on trial in May
Former Orlando Pirates coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic appeared briefly in the New Brighton Regional Court in the Eastern Cape on charges of sexual assault yesterday.
The Zambia national team coach’s matter was postponed for trial to May 25-26 and his bail of R10,000 was extended.
It is alleged that a 39-year-old woman‚ who was delivering coffee at the Wolfson Stadium during a Cosafa tournament in Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, on December 7‚ asked Sredojevic if he would need sugar with his coffee.
The 51-year-old Sredojevic allegedly told the woman he wanted a different type of sugar while pointing at her genitals. It is also alleged that the woman complained about Sredojevic’s conduct and her boss warned the coach not to do it again.
Later that day while delivering more coffee‚ Sredojevic allegedly touched the woman’s buttocks.
In August, a separate case of sexual assault against Sredojevic was opened at the Norwood police station following an alleged incident at Protea Hotel Wanderers in Illovo, Johannesburg.
The case was withdrawn due to insufficient evidence a month later.
The incident allegedly happened at the hotel where the alleged victim worked as a cleaner.
The alleged victim, who cannot be named as the law prohibits identifying victims of sexual crimes, told Sowetan two months ago she found out in December that her matter was withdrawn in
September.
A chief prosecutor perused through the evidence and decided that it was not strong enough to prosecute the coach, National
Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said at the time. –Additional reporting by Tankiso Makhetha
