Autumn: A time to harvest spiritual growth

As nature sheds leaves, we too can let things go

- By Nombuso Kumalo

The icy morning breeze and layering of thicker coats all point to the arrival of autumn. “Haerfest” or harvest season is the act of taking in crops – and this autumn season presents the opportunity to stock up on spiritual strength and realign our energies. Reboot your body and mind with these seasonal revelations to reset your spiritual compass.

Mystery

Autumn’s unpredictability is seen through the falling of leaves and felt in the dryness of the air. When confronted with new unknowns we often rely on our strength to overcome it – which leaves us quite exhausted. Surrendering to the mystery of the unknown allows us to relinquish ourselves from the need to have control over every inch of our lives.

Protection

The drop in temperature is a signal to increase vitamin intake. Strengthening immunity is one way we protect ourselves. Self-protection is equally as important for our minds and spiritual wellbeing. Seek comfort in spaces that make you feel safe and bring a sense of stillness. Make these your defence this season.

Preservation

Preserving mental health and overall wellness is just as important as strengthening it. Our resilience to our everchanging new normal is at danger of being worn out. This is why we must preserve the good spiritual work done. Autumn offers the opportunity to draw back and reconnect with ourselves. Take this time to reflect on the strides you have made in your spiritual journey.

Balance

When one looks carefully, the healing and restorative power of nature is visible. The wonder of the evolutionary cycle of life; how the old life selflessly gives way for the new. Autumn grants us the privilege to become true students of life. We learn to achieve harmony within ourselves by treasuring goodness and braving challenges – keeping the cycle between healing and restoration evergreen in our lives.

Change

Autumn is nature’s reminder that our bodies, minds and surroundings are constantly shifting. Resistance is the greatest threat to change and often leaves us in despair. In nature, the impermanence of life tells a story. Changes in our lives come in stages, allowing us to face one wave at a time. Embrace the present and everything it offers rather than investing everything on an unforeseeable future.

Letting go

It’s remarkable how nature sheds all its dried leaves to receive the newness that awaits. If we can introspect and shed the tired leaves of our egos, patterns of greed and pride, we are guaranteed a reward. Be courageous to set yourself free from things that can rob you of your joy and inner harmony.
