JoburgPlaces & Thunder Walker

-

Tucked to the side of Gandhi Square most inconspicuously you will find the Thunder Walker.

Built in 1904, this is the only remaining arcade building of early 1900s Johannesburg. Almost three years ago, the team from JoburgPlaces moved in to transform this building with steel balconies and vintage dark-green tiles into a space of storytelling, tours and fine meals.

Covid hit the small team hard but with a spirit of resilience they’ve innovated their offering of underground storytelling dinners to invite guests back for a safe experience.

Each night, they make available five tables in five different spaces. Guests can choose from a long table in the banqueting hall with views over Gandhi Square, a square table in the arcade, an archway table in the Zwipi Underground historical bank vault or between two intimate vault booths.

Tables can seat between 2 and 30 guests at the table they book beforehand but guests will be shown around the historical building on the night.

For a special JoburgPlaces touch, guests can book a private seven-phases of Joburg storytelling dinner with chief storyteller Charlie Moyo.

It is open for dinner from 5.30pm seven days a week. Bookings are essential.
