One Cape club likely to follow relegated Bizana

Steenberg fight it out with Spurs who face second demotion in two seasons

The writing is on the wall that one of the Mother City clubs between Steenberg United, Cape Town Spurs (formerly Ajax) and Cape Town All Stars will be the second GladAfrica Championship club to be relegated.

Bizana Pondo Chiefs’ inevitable demotion from the second-tier National First Division was confirmed on Wednesday.

Mediocre away record was the main undoing by the only Eastern Cape side in NFD, collected a measly four points out of possible 39 on the road.

What rubs salt into the wound for the Hunters is that never got a chance to plat a single game in their province, with King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban – 220km from Bizana – having been their adopted home.

Speaking to Sowetan in March, Pondo Chiefs owner Nkosinathi Mqokiyana said the club were to play their home games in Durban “because of lack of facilities in the Eastern Cape”.

Meanwhile, Steenberg, who are second from bottom, are mostly likely to follow Pondo

Chiefs to the ABC Motsepe League.

Steenberg’s last three games are against fellow strugglers and provincial foes All Stars (away), JDR Stars (home) and leaders Richards Bay (away) respectively. The Cape side’s journey won’t be easy as all their opponents are fighting various battles.

All Stars want to stave off relegation, while JDR still fancy their play-off chances. Bay have been dropping points recently. They could need the last game of the season to seal automatic promotion, meaning Steenberg will have their work cut out in KZN.

Spurs are two points away from Steenberg and they could still be easily axed. The Urban Warriors face Pretoria Callies (home), Free State Stars (away) and AmaTuks (home) in their last three games respectively.

Spurs boast a poor home record with just two wins out of 13 games in their backyard with six defeats and five draws.

Fixtures (all at 3pm) Tomorrow: Royal v Sporting, Chatsworth; Uthongathi v FS Stars, Princess Magogo; AmaTuks v Cosmos, Tuks Stadium;Spurs v Callies, Parow Park; Sekhukhune v C United, Makhulong;

Sunday: All Stars v Steenberg, Parow Park ; Richards Bay v JDR Stars, Richards Bay Sports; Polokwane v Pondo Chiefs, Peter Mokaba
