A policeman accused of raping a 15-yearold boy will today hear if the Pretoria North magistrate’s court will grant him bail.

The 38-year-old officer was arrested on October 14, six days after the alleged rape at his residence in Soshanguve block WW on October 8.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) investigator Alpheus Sefara testified at the bail hearing last week.

Sefara said the accused was a friend of the victim’s neighbour and had spent the day with the victim the day before the alleged rape.

Sefara said after [the officer] and the victim visited several drinking spots, at about 2am the victim suggested they leave before the tavern closed.

“The victim passed out after having a few sips of the drink he had left in the officer’s car. The victim doesn’t know how he left the tavern, how he arrived and how he entered the accused’s house,” he said, explaining that when the victim woke up he realised that the accused was penetrating him.

“The victim tried to scream for help but [the officer] blocked his mouth with his hand until he was done. He then told the victim to get dressed so that he can accompany him home,” said Sefara.

“The accused dragged the victim out of his vehicle at Soshanguve Extension 10 entrance via M17 Road, he left him there and drove off,” he said.

Sefara said the accused should not be granted bail.

“We still have outstanding statements and investigations are still underway,” he said, adding the accused might interfere with the investigations should he be granted bail.

The teenager’s mother told Sowetan that the rape was not the only trauma her son suffered.

“He did not get medical attention at the clinic because we didn’t have a case number. The medical team called the police but they did not pitch,” said the mother.

She explained that she went to Rietgaat, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa police stations for three consecutive days but was turned away at all of them.

“After they refused to open a case at Rietgaat police station on the morning of the incident, I went to Soshanguve police station and they told me to return to Soshanguve, which I did and was still not helped,” she said, adding that later that day she went to Ga-Rankuwa police station but did not get any help.

“The case was only opened three days later after community members threatened to shut down the police station,” the mother said.

She said her son had to be carried to hospital because he could not walk or sit after the rape incident.
