Radu back with BSA as board member

‘Regulation body needs renewal, resuscitation of structures’

It has become clearer now that boxing just can’t get enough of Khulile Radu.

Radu has rejoined the board of Boxing SA after being appointed by the sports ministry, which is the only higher power that employs board members.

The board has been one man down since Zandile Kabini resigned in August, leaving it with six members – chairperson Luthando Jack, Sakhiwo Sodo, Gilberto Martins, Azwitamisi Nthangeni, Nsikayezwe Sithole and Surej Maharaj.

Already, questions were being asked about the board’s constitutionality as it was one member short, but the ministry responded swiftly. Jack confirmed yesterday that Radu has been appointed as a board member.

“Yes, we have welcomed back Khulile Radu as a board member,” he said yesterday. “I think it’s good for the sport. He even had his first board meeting on Monday.”

Radu said: “I have not been lost to boxing because I have been working behind the scenes, however coming back to the engine room, to me it is a home-coming to work with people that I know very well. Boxing evolves; we have to catch-up with the rest of the world; other boxing bodies have so many champions in one weight division hence we need to renew what we have and resuscitate our structures.”

Radu, Jack, Martins, Sodo and Kabini served as executive board members of Boxing SA board which was appointed by sports minister Thulas Nxesi in 2017. Their term in office expired in 2020. Current sport minister Nathi Mthethwa brought them back and added two new members – Sithole and Maharaj.
