DA councillor ‘lied’ over political death threats
Kosani fears for his life ‘because he’s in love with a cop’s wife’
Buffalo City DA councillor Mawethu Kosani could be in deep trouble with his party and the authorities over allegations that he may have lied about receiving a politically motivated death threat.
It has now emerged that he may have feared for his life because he was allegedly having an affair with a policeman’s wife.
In August, Kosani filed a complaint with the police, alleging that he and his family had received death threats.
He received an envelope containing three bullets, two taped to a photo of him and his daughter, and the third on a message warning him to drop a motion he had filed with the council about the processes followed in the appointment to the municipality of ANC WB Rubusana regional spokesperson Vuyo Jali.
The note also revealed the names of his children, his car registration numbers and his address, and gave him a deadline of October 28 to withdraw the motion.
The city has since provided Kosani with security, pending a security risk assessment by the police.
Council speaker Humphrey Maxegwana confirmed that the municipality submitted a report to the council on the security issue and that it had been accepted.
But in a shocking twist, which has been confirmed by DA provincial leader Nqaba Bhanga, allegations have now surfaced that Kosani may have lied about the political motive for the threat to his life.
Bhanga said the party had taken the matter to its national structures. “The DA is investigating this issue. We have processed it to the federal legal council to check the legality of this issue. If councillor Kosani lied to the state, he would have offended the constitution of the DA.”
Bhanga said he wrote to the provincial police commissioner asking for security for Kosani, because he genuinely believed the councillor’s life was in danger.
Bhanga said he had been alerted to the possible lie by a police officer. Sources said a police officer had come forward, alleging that Kosani was having an affair with his wife and had run off with her.
An insider said: “He reported that the councillor had said his life was under threat due to ANC people but that is not the case – the councillor was really with the policeman’s wife.”
He said Kosani had apparently believed he would be shot by the jilted husband.
The insider said the policeman had further alleged that Kosani had persuaded the cop’s wife to take out a protection order against her husband.
Kosani said he was not aware that the DA had taken the matter to its federal legal council and had not received any written communication about it.
He maintained that he had received threats against his life, though he admitted knowing the police officer and his wife. Kosani said the two were going through a divorce. “I heard about that [the allegations by the officer]. The same person came to my house while I was in hiding and under protection.
“He even compromised my protection through and through, and the police themselves, the station commander, are aware of this thing. He came to my house while I was trying to assist an old friend of mine who was trying to hide – the person who he believed is his wife. Fortunately, these things come from the police, if any of these things [death threats] are being fabricated then he knows what to do ... he is law enforcement.
“He came to where I stay in hiding, carrying a firearm, driving a state car, at about 8pm,” he said.
Kosani said the threats had also disturbed his daughter, who had to be pulled out of her school.
Police spokesperson W/O Majola Nkohli said an investigation into the threats was at an advanced stage.
