Fans, colleagues bring flowers as they grieve DJ
Entrance to Sumbody’s club marked by bouquets
Dozens of flowers have been placed outside slain DJ Sumbody’s popular club Ayepyep Lifestyle in Menlyn, Pretoria, which has temporarily closed following his death.
Yesterday, the entrance at the club was marked by bouquets of flowers left by friends, colleagues and Ayepyep staff members as they paid tribute to Monate Mpolaye hitmaker.
DJ Sumbody, real name Oupa John Sefoka, and another person, were killed in a hail of bullets in Woodmead near Midrand, Johannesburg, just after midnight on Sunday.
A third person who was driving in another car was taken to hospital after he suffered gunshot wounds.
Association of Independent Record Companies of SA’s vice-president Stanley Khoza and musician Zuko Kupiso, aka Zuko SA, also laid flowers at the Pretoria club.
Khoza said: “It is shocking that someone who was doing good things is gone. I will forever remember the parties he used to host here.
“He and his team knew how to set up parties and entertain fans. Whoever did this (killing Sefoka) needs to face justice.’’
Khoza said he last spoke to the deceased in May and said he was a bubbly person.
“We were talking and he was full of laughter and sharing jokes. I had a great professional relationship with him. He was a great businessman to work with.”
The Ayepyep Lifestyle management said the public was welcome to bring flowers in memory of the DJ until Friday. The joint will reopen next week Monday.
Kupiso said: “He was an artist that I looked at from a distance. It is sad to watch someone that I hoped to work with one day die like this.’’
A worker who identified himself as Alie said he was grateful for Sefoka giving him a job at the joint in 2018. “He was a humble person who gave people a fair chance. He loved his employees and had a good heart. Whenever I had a problem, he would assist me.
“When I last spoke to him on Friday talking about Sunday’s event, he was happy and was looking forward to the event. I’m heart-broken about what happened,’’ said the worker.
