WITSAND NSRI Witsand Port Beau­fort crew ob­ser­ved a 42-year-old man lying be­hind a vehi­cle that was stan­ding par­ked on the slip­way at the sea res­cue ba­se on Sa­tur­day 10 March. T­heo Eras­mus (NSRI Witsand Port Beau­fort S­ta­ti­on Com­man­der) said: “On in­ves­ti­ga­ti­on, by­stan­ders in­for­med us that he is from Ca­pe To­wn and part of a group of ka­y­a­kers ta­king part in a ka­y­ak fis­hing com­pe­ti­ti­on. He had re­por­ted­ly just co­me off the wa­ter and was com­plai­ning of an al­ler­gic re­acti­on cau­sing him to col­lap­se. So­me of the by­stan­ders as­sis­ted in get­ting the se­mi-con­s­ci­ous man in­to our NSRI me­di­cal room.” He was as­ses­sed by NSRI me­di­cal crew and was found to be in a se­ri­ous con­di­ti­on sho­wing signs and symp­toms of an al­ler­gic re­acti­on from an unkno­wn cau­se. Me­di­cal tre­at­ment was pro­vi­ded by our NSRI me­di­cs and WC Go­vern­ment He­alth EMS was acti­va­ted. On their ar­ri­val, pa­ra­me­di­cs sta­bi­li­sed the pa­tient on the sce­ne and he was trans­por­ted to a hos­pi­tal in a se­ri­ous but sta­ble con­di­ti­on for furt­her me­di­cal ca­re. He is ex­pected to ma­ke a full re­co­ve­ry.
