Allergic reaction almost critical
WITSAND NSRI Witsand Port Beaufort crew observed a 42-year-old man lying behind a vehicle that was standing parked on the slipway at the sea rescue base on Saturday 10 March. Theo Erasmus (NSRI Witsand Port Beaufort Station Commander) said: “On investigation, bystanders informed us that he is from Cape Town and part of a group of kayakers taking part in a kayak fishing competition. He had reportedly just come off the water and was complaining of an allergic reaction causing him to collapse. Some of the bystanders assisted in getting the semi-conscious man into our NSRI medical room.” He was assessed by NSRI medical crew and was found to be in a serious condition showing signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction from an unknown cause. Medical treatment was provided by our NSRI medics and WC Government Health EMS was activated. On their arrival, paramedics stabilised the patient on the scene and he was transported to a hospital in a serious but stable condition for further medical care. He is expected to make a full recovery.
