SA artist ’ s R1.8m New York hit

- SUTHENTIRA GOVENDER

AN artwork painted in just four days by South African artist Conor Mccreedy has been bought for R1.8-million by an American collector.

The 26-year-old, who has a studio in New York, is stunned that the 3.6m Secret Movements even attracted any interest from collectors.

“This is the highest price fetched for any of my paintings,” said Mccreedy. “I’m honoured that people would spend this amount of money on one of my creations.”

And, according to his agent, the US collector recently rejected a R2.4-million offer for the painting of the ocean.

The collector, whom the New York-based artist has refused to name, is also interested in the South African’s latest artwork, Blue Angel— for another huge sum.

Mccreedy excelled at art and sport at Hilton College in KwaZulu-Natal and went to the US five years ago on a golf scholarship.

But in 2007 he succumbed to the lure of art — and also signed up as a model.

In 2011, Mccreedy, who mainly paints in blue and white, completed a giant mural bearing the name “Mandela” on his New York apartment building.
