Outrage over ‘ hot ’ list of women execs
Tech bosses slam saucy article in men s magazine as insulting
OME of the world’s top female IT executives are furious at being named as the 40 “hottest ” women in the industry. The business leaders, including bigwigs of Yahoo, Facebook and YouTube, said that the list was “dumb” and “insulting ”.
The Daily Mail reports that a US men’s magazine, Complex, published the feature on its website with a photo gallery of its pick of “wonderful ” and “cunning” female innovators. It sparked a social media frenzy.
It showed a scantily clad image of the top choice, YouTube host Marina Orlova, as well as photos of Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer, Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, Flickr cofounder Caterina Fake and the president of the ticket-selling site Eventbrite, Julia Hartz.
Gina Trapani, founder of the log Lifehacker, wrote after finding out that she had secured 22nd place: “This week I was called every obscenity in the book, then included on a hottest women in tech list. I think it’s time to get offline now.”
VentureBeat ’ s technology reporter, Jolie O’Dell, who was sixth on the list, demanded that her name be removed: “Get me off this list NOW. I am not flattered and neither is any other thinking woman you’ve included in this drivel.”
Show lucky she was to have kissed him, but she was unimpressed, the Daily Mail reports.
It was disgusting. I didn’t kiss anyone else until I was 16, I think. I was a late bloomer.”
