Reservoir Hills cancer drive a huge success
Hills residents brought themselves and their cheque books to show support for the fight against cancer during a recent 12-hour sporting event.
The turnout was in honour of the event planned by The Reservoir Hills Sports and Recreation Club (RHSRC) and the Rotary Club of Reservoir Hills.
The organisations put together their own community versions of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Relay for Life event — an international movement that unites cancer survivors and communities.
The 1 500 people who attended raised R110 000, which was donated to Cansa.
RHSRC treasurer Jayce Singh said 88 teams registered to play their part.
He said the fact that people from across the province responded to the organisation’s call was “most pleasing”.
“People from all over KwaZulu-Natal attended this event.
“The atmosphere was carnival-like with the fireworks display and cancer survivors as the special guests on the night. We really wanted to make them feel like royalty, so we offered them lots of pampering, including massages.
“It is very heartening to know that people now want to talk about cancer.
“The more we allow ourselves to be educated about this dreadful illness, the more equipped we will be to handle and overcome this war against cancer,” said Singh.
RHSRC chairman Chris Naidoo said due to the success of the event, they would be looking into starting a support group to assist those touched by the disease.
“We plan to launch it soon. Anyone who wants to get involved in the support group is humbly requested to log on to www.reshillsports.co.za.”
