WHERE TO EAT

THERE’S really no shortage of places to eat in this neck of the woods, particularly if you decide to sit down for a meal at either Brooklyn Mall or Design Square.

That said, we recommend the iconic Tribeca Coffee

Shop , (012) 460-3068, in the downstairs courtyard of the Design Square. It is without a doubt one of SA’s coolest looking foodie spots and does everything from a mean coffee to a killer cocktail.

Alternatively try the

Lucky Bread Company, (012) 346-0979, in Brooklyn Mall for the best sandwiches we’ve had in a while, washed down with delicious coffee or fresh juice (plus, pick up a loaf to go while you’re there).

Papa’s Real Food, (012) 362-2224, is the classic (read: seriously popular) Duncan Yard eatery but we had a delightful and hearty lamb curry pie at the adjacent

Deli on Duncan, (012) 3624054, which we’d certainly recommend for a light lunch, a slice of cake or breakfast.

GETTING STARTED

AS you’ll see from our map on the previous page, all the stores and shopping complexes mentioned in this precinct are in pretty close proximity to each other. Not quite walking distance, but a quick and easy drive.

We’d suggest starting at Duncan Yard in Hatfield and then heading down Jan Shoba Street (formerly Duncan Street) to Brooklyn Mall and the adjoining Design Square. There are a couple of cool decor stops on the way there if you’re up for a bit of an amble.

After that, if you’re on the hunt for interior fabrics, the Design Village — home to four of our leading fabric houses — is literally two blocks away.

Oh, and Joburgers take note — if you’re up for a morning’s “out of town” experience, we’d suggest taking the Gautrain to Hatfield station and then walking the short distance to Duncan Yard for a spot of shopping, morning tea or light lunch. No car required!
