My Kind of Holiday

-

Your favourite city abroad and why?

New York. I love the hustle and bustle, coffee shops on every corner and just a general energy buzz.

What must a first-time visitor see there?

Wake up early and watch the people coming out of every nook and cranny and pretty much enveloping the streets. It’s like a giant ant town. One in Austin, Texas, a crazy, dirty place. I sat in a hot bath for days afterwards, just crying and scrubbing myself with a wire brush.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday?

A love bite on my neck.

And your worst holiday yet? What happened?

Port Nolloth. We were expecting crayfish and white beaches but, alas, there was nothing there.

Which is the worst hotel you have stayed in? Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?

Gordon Ramsay. I’d always get great food, good, clean accommodation and have a good laugh.

What is the most exotic dish you have ever eaten on holiday?

Soft-shell crabs in Annapolis, Maryland, US, with our transport anchored just off shore.

One place you want to see before you die?

Antarctica.

Have you had any embarrassing moments as a traveller?

I once drank a “little” too much on an international flight and went walkabout. When I got back, there was a stranger sitting in my seat. I demanded they move, which they refused to do. I was eventually ushered back to my seat by security. I wasn’t embarrassed then, but when we landed the next day and I heard the news about the evening before, I’m sure I was red for a week.

What do you avoid on holiday?

Contiki tours and too many people.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?

Carry a little bag that is easy to access with all your important stuff in it.

One travel destination you would call “never again”?

Port Nolloth. Ever heard of it?
