IF YOU GO . . .

-

WHERE IT IS: 12km from Stilbaai.

WHY GO THERE: It’s close enough to enjoy a day on the beach, a cast in the river or a paddle out at the legendary point breaks, but it’s far enough from the crowds for some peace and quiet. Rusticluxury cottages and a warm welcome from the owners will leave you feeling instantly relaxed.

WHAT IT’S LIKE: Kevin and Italia Wood have transformed a scruffy piece of hillside into an abundant estate of vineyards, gardens, olive groves and lavender. The hillside cottages offer lovely views of the river and distant forests.

Kayaks and rowing boats are on hand for messing about on the river, though fishing is only legal in a controlled area close to Stilbaai.

WHAT IT OFFERS: Two fully equipped cottages, well suited to couples or small families. Milkwood Cottage sleeps two in an en-suite bedroom, with two single beds in the lounge if needed. There’s a stoep and garden with river views.

The beautifully restored Stone Cottage has high ceilings, a cast-iron stove in the fireplace and a spacious living area. The main bedroom is spacious, with a second bedroom (two single beds) off the living area. The spacious stoep and sheltered braai area are ideal for summer evenings.

AND THE FOOD: Self-catering. There are microwaves and a generous supply of free wood to keep the braai fire going. Ask Kevin to show you the cellar, where he makes wine. The couple also produce and sell their own olive oil.

RATES: R600-R650 per cottage per

night.

GETTING THERE: Follow the N2 from Cape Town towards George. About 12km after Riversdale, turn right onto the R305. Follow this for 25km until you reach Stilbaai. After crossing the Goukou Bridge, turn right and follow this road for 12km. Long Thin Farm is clearly signposted.
