Saving the rhinos through song

- DOREEN PREMDEV

TWO singing siblings are helping to save South Africa’s dwindling rhino population from extinction.

Six-year-old Tianna Aaron and her brother, Tyrone, 11, took to the stage at the Rhino Music Concert fundraiser in Houghton last Sunday to “give a voice to the rhinos”.

The Johannesburg brother and sister both attend the Edenglen Primary School.

Tyrone, a Grade 6 pupil who is studying by correspondence through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, penned and performed Our Beautiful Rhino.

“I wanted to get involved in saving the rhinos after I read Lawrence Anthony’s book, The Last Rhinos. In his book he talks about his journey to save the rhinos. They are my favourite animals and I want them to be around for generations to come,” he said. Tyrone first performed Our

Beautiful Rhino — which he wrote with the help of his father, Theo — two weeks ago when he was the opening act for the Parlotones at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City.

Tianna, who is in Grade 1, performed a gospel song, Creator

King , which she chose because “God loves all his creations”.

“I think it is cruel what poachers are doing to the rhinos. I want to do whatever I can to stop them,” she said.

The R30 000 raised will be donated to the Sabi Sands Conservation Trust and Rhino South Africa (Green Wall of Africa) youth project.
