Our Candice keeps coining it

-

SOUTH Africa’s Candice Swanepoel is still on the top 10 list of Forbes magazine’s highestpaid supermodels of 2012-13.

She comes in at number nine, behind Gisele Bündchen of Brazil, who tops the latest list for the seventh consecutive year.

Bündchen earned $35-million (about R350-million) more than second-placed Miranda Kerr, who earned $7-million in the period spanning June 2012 to June this year.

The bulk of Bündchen’s $42-million earnings are attributed by Forbes to her stake in Brazilian footwear company Grendene, whose shares have more than doubled since 2012; her ecofriendly cosmetics line Sejaa; and contracts with Pantene, Oral-B and Sky HDTV, among others. This year she secured lucrative campaigns with Chanel beauty and Swedish highstreet chain H&M.

Despite the impressive figures, Bündchen is down $3-million from the previous year.

The top-earners’ list is populated mainly by former or current Victoria’s Secret models.

Swanepoel and Adriana Lima (in third place) are current “Angels” for the Victoria’s Secret brand. Bündchen held the same position from 2000 until 2007 and Kerr from 2007 until earlier this year. Liu Wen (fifth), Hilary Rhoda (sixth) and Joan Smalls (eighth) have all walked in the annual Victoria’s Secret show.

Lima can attribute her thirdplace position almost entirely to the lingerie brand. As their longest-serving Angel — she got her wings in 2000 — the Brazilian holds the most lucrative modelling contract in the company.

Kate Moss is the oldest model to feature on the list — she will turn 40 next January. She slips from last year’s second place to this year’s fourth. She holds contracts with Rimmel, Versace, Vogue eyewear and Carphone Warehouse, and is rumoured to be planning to bare all for the 60th anniversary issue of Playboy next year.

“Kate still has enormous international presence,” said Ivan Bart, senior vice-president and managing director of Moss’s New York modelling agency, IMG models.

“She’s still doing a lot of modelling and business around the world. She’s not very in-yourface in the US, but she’s got a number of English and European associations.”

China’s Liu Wen and Puerto Rico’s Smalls are new additions to the list. Those who appeared on last year’s list but failed to make it this year are Natalia Vodianova, Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes.
