IF YOU GO . . .
WHERE IT IS: Die Kliphuis is on the main road, on the edge of the village — Sutherland side.
WHAT IT HAS: This comfortable country inn, set in a 150-year-old heritage building, has five en-suite rooms decorated with period pieces. For shy couples, the open-plan toilet and bathroom design may be of concern but your host can arrange alternative rooms elsewhere. There’s a pool for hot days, a small function room and a good on-site restaurant.
WHY GO THERE: Besides the fossil footprint collection at Gansfontein (call Dawn on 023 741 1012 to arrange access), the town’s well preserved Karoo architecture is notable and there’s a museum that’s worth visiting, too. For those in bakkies, 4x4s or on adventure motorcycles, the old postal route between Fraserburg and Sutherland rewards with spectacular views. And, with its growing collection of restaurants and coffee-shops, Sutherland is worth visiting before returning via one of the other back roads. You may even spot the endangered riverine rabbit ( Bunolagus monticularis) en route. THE FOOD: The steak meal Ronél le Roux conjured up for me in her cosy little restaurant was superb. Her basting sauce recipe: 1 cup olive oil; ½ cup balsamic vinegar; ¼ cup soy sauce; ¼ cup worcester sauce. Add your own signature taste eg red wine, sherry, chutney, coke, chilli. RATES: From R335 pp per night sharing.
