Man finds nephew in morgue

- DOREEN PREMDEV

A JOHANNESBURG man’s worst nightmare became a reality this week when he checked a morgue and found the body of “my favourite” nephew.

Hylton Keshwar was left “broken” when it turned out that body number 2191/13 at the Johannesburg government mortuary in Hillbrow was that of his nephew, Luke Dustin Keshwar, 22.

He had gone missing five days earlier.

“Luke went missing last Thursday night. He came to visit me in Midrand.

“At 9.30pm he said he wanted to return to his sister’s home, where he had been living, in Windsor, Randburg. I suggested he stay but he refused. I assumed someone was going to fetch him. When he did not reach Windsor, we were worried and opened a missing person’s report at Midrand police station last Friday,” said Keshwar.

“I’d checked hospitals, jail cells, morgues since last Friday. My last attempt was at the Hillbrow morgue. I was hoping not to find him there, but the second body I viewed was his.

“Luke’s watch, cellphone, wallet and belt were stolen and he was stabbed in his neck and chest and had lacerations on his arms.”

Luke, who had grown up in Durban and lived in Vryheid with his mother, came to Johannesburg with the hope of making a success of his life.

He was employed as an IT consultant for Discovery, but his contract ended on Tuesday last week.

He hoped to find another job soon, said Keshwar.

Luke is survived by his parents, Gordon Keshwar and Genevieve Naidoo, and his older sister Oneihl Keshwar. He is the cousin of a former Miss South Africa, Tatum Keshwar.

His funeral was held in Merewent, Durban, yesterday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Luke’s body was found on the corner of Solomon and Enoch Sontonga streets in Braamfontein with stab wounds. No arrests had been made.

Keshwar appealed to anyone with information to contact warrant officer Judas Marakalala 071-642-8935.
