Mothers join hands so that kids can play
AFTER stewing over how they could help a school pay for a badly needed netball court, a group of Durban mothers cooked up a tasty solution.
Last week, the Al-Falaah College moms’ committee launched a cookbook featuring nearly 90 halaal-friendly recipes.
Yasiera Suliman, chair of the committee, was aided in the initiative by fellow mothers Hawwa Khan, Raeesa Aboobaker and Sadia Joosab.
The group was overwhelmed by the number of recipe entries from both Al-Falaah mothers and the community after spreading the word about the book.
Suliman said they eventually selected 87 of the most innovative recipes from the more than 200 they received.
“A lot of women have well-known recipes that they have tweaked, and those are recipes that you won’t find in any cookbook. And we ensured that the methods were simple and the ingredients easily accessible. There is no point in featuring an element that can be found in only one store,” she said.
Aboobaker said although the main aim was to raise funds, the book’s purpose was twofold.
“This book is empowering in a way to the women featured. For them to see their contributions in print means a great deal.”
The cookbook features recipes for starters, mains, desserts, pickles, chutney and nonalcoholic drinks, and also includes health and lifestyle tips.
Out-of-the-ordinary dishes include cranberry vinaigrette, Arabic coffee and red chicken. The book retails at R100 and is available from the Al-Falaah College. All proceeds go towards the girls’ netball court fund. Contact (031) 208-7652 for more information.
